多益準備貿易相關的TOEIC單字

 

 1  US pork 

 noun  美豬

為什麼美國豬肉不叫 US pig 呢？這是因為 pig 是豬這個物種的泛稱。

「美豬」只是「美國豬肉」的簡稱而不是「美國豬」，所以在翻譯的時候就要對照豬肉而不是豬，所以在翻譯美豬時，精確的翻譯是 US pork。

 

 例句 

 U.S. pork  containing ractopamine is coming soon to store shelves.

含萊克多巴胺的美國豬肉即將上架。

 

Health authorities are concerned that the cheaper  U.S. pork  could find its way into many processed foods.

衛生當局擔心，更便宜的美豬可能會進入許多加工食品中。

 

 

 

 

 2  export / import 

 verb   noun  出口 / 進口

台灣與其他國家做生意，國與國之間的商品或服務的交換，並牽涉到貨幣的交易，就是進口（我跟你買）及出口（我賣給你）。

如果你覺得 export 和 import 這兩個字很像，很容易搞混，這裡教你字根和字首，可以幫助你區別它們並有效記憶單字。

▪字首  ex-  即是「向外的、離開」， im- / in-  即是「向內的、進入」。

▪字根  port   源自拉丁文 portare 有「攜帶」的意思。

 

 例句 

In contrast, manufacturing is still rebounding strongly thanks to in part to improving  export  demand, with sharply rising levels of output and new orders helping to slow the rate of job losses in the sector.

相較之下，製造業仍在強勁反彈，這在一定程度上要歸功於出口需求的改善，產量與新訂單的大幅增加幫助緩和了該行業的失業率。

 

Mali  imports  5 million tonnes of goods every year, from woven cotton to cement, some of which arrive at ports across West Africa and are trucked hundred of miles inland.

馬利每年進口500噸商品，從紡織棉到水泥，其中一部分到西非的港口，然後用卡車運往內陸數百英里。

 

 

 

 3  waybill

 noun  貨運單

waybill 的意思是什麼呢？

在國際貿易中，waybill 指的是一批貨物的相關資料文件，清楚標註這批貨物的內容、日期、發貨地、收件地…等等，也就是給海關查看的商品護照。

 

 例句 

He swiped a bar-code wand across the  waybill , which showed the contents and destination of the shipment.

他在貨運單上用條碼掃描器刷了一下，上面顯示了貨物的內容跟目的地。

 

I am thinking in particular of the provisions made for sea  waybills  and electronic data interchange.

我正在考慮有關海運單跟電子數據交換的特別規章。

 

 

 

 

 4  container

 noun  貨櫃

海運是國際貿易運輸中占最大宗的，在台灣的國際碼頭可以看見滿滿的貨櫃，而這些貨櫃進到國內之後，可能再經由貨車或火車運送到台灣各地。

 

 例句 

Trains would carry passengers and commodities including grain, fertilizer, pipe,  containers  and sulfur, Treadwell said.

Treadwell說：火車可以運載乘客和包括穀物、肥料、管線、貨櫃與硫磺在內的商品。

 

The West Seattle Bridge rises 140 feet because the Port of Seattle aspired to construct a big  container  terminal upstream, requiring more clearance than previous river ships needed.

西雅圖大橋高達140英尺，這是因為西雅圖港意圖在上游的終端建造一個大型貨櫃碼頭，因此需要比之前只有內河船更多的淨空率。

 

 

 

 5  cargo

 noun  (船、飛機、車輛裝載的) 貨物

如果去 Google 搜尋 cargo 這個單字，就會發現前一個單字 container（貨櫃）也包含在裡面，這是因為 cargo 是指用飛機、船或貨車載送的貨物泛稱。

與 goods（商品）這個多益常考的單字不同，通常 cargo 是出現在港口和碼頭，而 goods 比較會出現在倉庫或商店內。

 

 例句 

The  cargo  plane made an emergency landing on a nearby farm area.

一架貨機緊急迫降在附近的農場。

 

A drawbridge would accommodate any ship mast or  cargo , but create traffic jams.

吊橋可以容納任何船隻或貨物，但會造成交通堵塞。

 

 

 

 

 6  quay

 noun  碼頭

▪port  noun  港口

▪harbor  noun  港灣，海港

 

可能很多人會覺得 port 和 harbor 不都是碼頭嗎？雖然看起來有點像，但是這三個單字在英文中的意思是非常不一樣的！

quay 是指海邊或河岸可以停船的地方，port 是指規模小一點的港口，像富基漁港的英文是 Fuji Fishing Port，而 harbor 則是指一整個港灣，像是 New York Harbor 就是指紐約港。

 

 例句 

A chunk is missing from the  quay  where the explosion took place and the immediate surrounding area appears almost entirely razed.

發生爆炸的碼頭少了一大塊，鄰近的周遭地區更是幾乎被夷為平地。

 

The Swedish teen arrived in the port of the Portuguese capital on Tuesday and was sailing toward the  quay , before heading to neighboring Spain to attend the U.N.

這位瑞典少年在星期二抵達葡萄牙首都港口，正駛向碼頭，然後前往鄰國西班牙參加聯合國大會。

 

 

 

 7  exchange rate

 noun  匯率

國與國之間的交易，通常會因為使用不同的貨幣或幣值的不同，所以需要做兌換，而這個兌換的數值金額是會隨著國際情勢變化，也會因為國家政策而有變動，這個數值的波動就是匯率的基本概念。

 

 例句 

As with any currency exchange, the precise  exchange rate  is important.

與任何貨幣兌換一樣，精確的匯率兌換也相當重要。

 

The yuan is tightly controlled by Beijing and its  exchange rate  is the source of much tension between the US and China.

人民幣受到北京的嚴格控制，其匯率是美中關係緊張的根源。

 

 

 

 8  gross weight

 noun  (商品含包裝) 總重量；毛重

gross weight 意思是總重量，是一個常會在海關用到的專業術語。

gross 的意思是「總的」，而另一個多數人熟悉的俗語意思是「噁心」。

但是大家要記住，在TOEIC多益考試中是不會考俗語的，所以當你在多益聽力部分聽到 gross，一定要想到毛重而不是噁心！

 

 例句 

The helicopter’s  gross weight  before take-off was 6.58 tons.

直升機的總重量在起飛前是6.58噸。

 

 Gross Weight  is the total weight of a shipment of goods, including their packaging such as crates, pallets etc.

毛重是指一批貨物的總重量，包含它們的包裝，如木箱、塑膠等等。
